God gives each of us stories.
Some are written in the Book of Life. They are also called destinies. They are the paths He planned for us to walk in this life. No sorrow, lack, or sickness appears in those stories.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t live the story to which we were called perfectly. Life happens and things get messed up. That’s all right. God is the master story writer and can turn the tragedies we encounter into something good, if we trust him to do so.
But God is not only about destinies. He also gives stories to teach, explain, entertain. That’s why His word, the Bible, is written mostly in stories. Instead of a boring rule book, He has given us examples of those who walked with Him, and those who didn’t. In His grace, He gave us the choice to follow his advice or not. It’s up to us.
God, in his infinite wisdom, has granted some of us the privilege to be co-storytellers with Him. Some tell stories of what the Lord has done in people’s lives. They might be called pastors.
Some abuse this gift and write about dark and perverted things, where evil wins over good, to frighten, to terrify, to subvert.
And some of us take up the Lord’s call to tell stories that encourage, teach, and edify.
Think of your favorite stories. Do they entertain? Certainly. But they usually also encourage and teach us something. How the hero had to defeat adversity to persevere and save the day. How love overcomes every obstacle. How forgiveness can heal a soul. You get the idea.
Writers, we have been given an awesome gift. Let us cherish it and tell the stories the Lord has placed in our heart. Let us do so with care and excellence so they encourage, teach, and entertain, all at the same time.
What did God place in your heart? Are you willing to put in the effort to tell your story worthy of its divine origin?
